From Ruins to Resurrection

July 17, 2026

When Cyclone Gita struck Tonga in February 2018, it left a trail of widespread destruction, and the Siasi Uesiliana Tau’ataina’ O Tonga (SUTT) church in Mu’a was among the many structures damaged. Yet amid the debris, the cross outside the church stood firm, a poignant symbol of resilience. The following is a collection of photos I captured 5 months after the destruction.

In the years that followed, homes, businesses, and places of worship were gradually rebuilt. The Mu’a Falelotu Toetu’u, which translates to Sanctuary or Church Resurrection, congregation raised funds from both local supporters and the Tongan diaspora, with families, groups, and individuals contributing generously to the cause. Though the project faced a series of unexpected delays, perseverance and faith carried them forward. Finally, by the grace of God, the new church was completed and dedicated to God’s glory on June 23, 2026.

So glad I was present to witness the dedication.
