Almighty God,

We come before you heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that occurred near our church last night. A drive-by shooting left five people injured, one young adult of 19 years old and four precious children, the youngest being a mere 3 years old.

Our hearts ache for these innocent victims. Grant the young adult and the four children strength and resilience as they heal from their physical wounds and emotional trauma. Surround them with skilled medical professionals and the unwavering love of their families. 

We also pray for the individual who was stabbed at our neighborhood Kroger’s yesterday morning. For the families facing fear and uncertainty, we pray for your comforting presence. Grant them strength to support their loved ones during this difficult time.

We pray for the perpetrators. Redirect and transform their thoughts, minds, hearts, and lives.

Guide our community towards healing and peace. May we work together to create a safer future where innocent lives, young and old, are not put at risk by violence. Empower us to speak out against gun violence and all forms of violence and work tirelessly towards a future where children can play freely without fear.

In your infinite mercy, we pray. Amen.

What does it truly mean to abide in Christ? It’s not just believing; it’s about staying connected, engaged, and completely relying on Christ. Just like my phone dies without being plugged in, we can’t live a vibrant Christian life without staying connected to our source – Christ and His church. And when we do, when we truly abide in Christ, we experience a joy and fulfillment that is unparalleled. The same is true when we care for the Earth, when we honor the incredible gift God has given us: this beautiful Earth. It’s not just a duty; it’s a source of joy and wonder, and a vital part of our spiritual journey.

Did you do anything special for Earth Day this year? Maybe plant a tree, pick up some trash, or simply take a moment to appreciate the wonder of nature? We have a committed gardener who comes to the church to work on the garden, and we’re grateful. We always have folks working on projects around the church and we’re blessed. Indeed, we are individually and collectively God’s ongoing work project.

The Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 24:1, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” We are called to be caretakers, not abusers. So, as we talk about abiding in Christ and strengthening our church connections, I also want to challenge you to consider how you can connect with and care for the Earth.

Here are some ideas:

  • Plant a garden: Even a small herb box on your windowsill can bring life and beauty. Someone gifted me a small potted aloe vera plant last year, and it enjoys the sunshine each morning by the kitchen window.
  • Volunteer for a local clean-up: Every little bit helps keep our parks and waterways healthy.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Simple steps can make a big difference.

We can extend this care to our own church grounds!

We all know the feeling of walking by an empty water bottle, a chip bag, or a cigarette bud. It may not be our trash, but caring for our church – God’s house – is a responsibility we all share. It’s not just the trustees’ job or the cleaning crew’s burden. When we see something, let’s do something about it. Taking a moment to pick up a piece of trash is a simple act of love for God and creation. It shows we care about our church community and the beautiful world God has entrusted to us. Let’s remember we are all stewards of this Earth.

A Total Eclipse: Reflecting Light and Wonder

This past Sunday’s message resonated as we explored the power of faith in 1 John. We learned that darkness may come but cannot extinguish the light of Christ within us. This concept was mirrored in the awe-inspiring total solar eclipse many of us witnessed on Monday.

Did you have the chance to experience this celestial marvel? I was fortunate enough to witness it, and it was truly a sight to behold. As the moon temporarily blocked the sun, it evoked a sense of wonder in me. It was a reminder that the light remains even in moments of shadow.

The eclipse serves as a powerful metaphor for our faith. Just as the moon cannot permanently eclipse the sun, darkness cannot extinguish the radiance of our faith. Challenges and hardships may cast shadows over our lives, but like the moon eventually moving on, these shadows will pass.

John’s message reminds us that following Christ is a journey, not a destination. We strive to walk in his light, reflecting God’s love with every step. When we stumble, we confess, seek forgiveness, and get back on track. May our collective light shine brightly, illuminating the world around us, just as the sun inevitably returns after the eclipse.

Dear God, on this glorious Easter Sunday, a wave of joy washes over us as we celebrate the resurrection of your son, Jesus Christ! The news that the tomb is empty fills our hearts with a hope that transcends all darkness.

The image of the risen Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene, the first to witness the miracle, reminds us that your love and promises are unfailing.

Grant us, Lord, the unwavering faith of Mary Magdalene and the other disciples who believed in the face of doubt. May the joy of Jesus’ resurrection fill us with renewed strength and purpose.

Help us to carry the message of hope and redemption into the world, sharing your love with all we encounter. May the light of Christ illuminate our path and guide us towards a life of compassion, service, and love.

We sing your praises, O God, for the victory of life over death! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, on this Holy Saturday, a hush descends upon the earth. The world seems to hold its breath, suspended between the immense sacrifice of Good Friday and the glorious dawn of Easter. The tomb where Jesus lies is a stark reminder of human mortality, yet a quiet hope stirs within us. We remember the promise of resurrection, a promise whispered through the ages. Grant us solace in this stillness, Lord. May we use this time for reflection, contemplating the profound meaning of Jesus’ sacrifice and the transformation it brings. As we wait in anticipation, strengthen our faith and kindle a flame of hope within our hearts. Prepare us to receive the glorious news of your son’s resurrection and the promise of new life in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, on this Good Friday, a day shrouded in sorrow, we remember Jesus’ immense suffering. The betrayal, mockery, and agonizing pain of the cross unfold before us, a stark reminder of the tremendous price paid for our salvation.

Even amidst the crushing weight of Good Friday, a flicker of hope remains. Jesus’ unwavering love for humanity shines through in his final act of forgiveness: “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

Lord, help us find strength in Jesus’ sacrifice, a testament to the depths of your love for us. May we learn from his example of compassion and forgiveness, even in the face of immense pain.

As we contemplate the darkness of this day, may we hold fast to the promise whispered in those final words – the promise of redemption, of a new beginning, and the light to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer

Dear God, on this Maundy Thursday, a weight settles on our hearts as we remember the Last Supper. The image of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet is a powerful reminder of his profound humility and unwavering love.

At this sacred meal, Jesus established a lasting gift – the Sacrament of Holy Communion. As we share in bread and wine, we remember his words, “This is my body, broken for you” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25).

Help us not just to hear these words but genuinely embody them in our lives. May we embrace the spirit of service and willingly lower ourselves to lift others. Grant us the courage to perform acts of love, no matter how seemingly small, for they can have a profound impact on those around us.

We also remember Jesus’ commandment to love one another, a love that transcends circumstances and surpasses any differences.

Help us to cultivate a heart overflowing with love and forgiveness, just as Jesus loved and forgave his disciples on the eve of his sacrifice. May we extend compassion and understanding to those around us, fostering a world where your love reigns supreme. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Merciful Lord, on this Holy Wednesday, we reflect on the betrayal and denial Jesus experienced from those closest to Him. Help us to examine our own hearts and repent of any ways we have strayed from your will. May this time of reflection deepen our commitment to follow Christ, even in the face of adversity and temptation. Just as Judas betrayed Jesus and Peter denied him, we acknowledge our own moments of weakness and failure. Yet, in your infinite mercy, you offer us forgiveness and redemption through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Grant us the strength and courage to follow Christ faithfully, and may we draw closer to you during this Holy Week. Amen.

Jesus’ arrival on a donkey, a symbol of peace, starkly contrasts the expectations of a conquering king. This quiet act underscores the true nature of his mission – one of humility, service, and ultimate sacrifice. We reflect on the events leading to the cross. Grant us the courage to walk alongside Jesus. Help us to set aside distractions and focus our hearts on the significance of this sacred time. May our actions and prayers be a testament to our commitment to follow Christ. Amen.
